After being behind by double figures in the fourth quarter, Tennessee State fought back to tie the game, but came up short in overtime 90-86.
Tennessee State came out strong in the first quarter shooting 57.1% ( 4-7) from downtown and leading for for 8:53 of the ten minutes of the opening quarter. Erica Haynes-Overton scored 10 of her 13 first half points as the Tigers took a 22-14 lead into the second quarter.
Despite the Tigers shooting 54.5% (6-11) in the second quarter, the Tigers were wrought with 7 turnovers , which SEMO turned into 19 points, contributing to TSU’s eight-point cushion transforming into a three-point deficit at the half, 39-36.
Southeast Missouri used a strong third quarter in which the RedHawks outscored the Tigers 25-13, building as much as 16-point advantage as Tennessee State committed another 8 turnovers in the quarter, en route to 22 miscues on the evening.
When Jaliyah Green’s layup put the Redhawks up 66-49 with 9:00 left in the game, it appeared that SEMO might be on their way to cruising to a comfortable win. The extra frame was unkind to Tennessee State ; SEMO outscored TSU 15-11 as the Tigers shot just 25% and turned the ball over three times, two of which came at critical moments, which lead to 4 points.
The loss drops the Lady Tigers to 8-15 overall and just 3-9 in the OVC. Erica Haynes-Overton led four Lady Tigers scorers in double figures with 24 points and 6 assists. Saniah Parker turned in strong performance with a season-high 20 points on 7-10 FG and 3-6 from downtown. Lyric Cole turned in a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Gia Adam’s chipped in 10 points but only shot 3-11 from the floor.
Kiyley Flowers led SEMO with 21 points and 7 assists.
Tennessee State will look to pick themselves off the mat Saturday when they will host the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech; tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM CST
